On-Cor Foods Pop-Up featuring Richard Kind

Listing Photo In 2003, we manufactured for Blue Chip Marketing and On-Cor Foods a Pop-Up promotional piece that featured the actor Richard Kind. The commercials featured Kind as a point-of-purchase salesperson. When consumers exclaimed that it was too much food for one person, he would then invite himself over with his family to help eat On-Cor’s delicious line of prepared foods. Watch Richard Kind invite himself and his family over for dinner in connection with this Pop-Up!        ...

Rand McNally Dist-O-Map

Listing Photo Rand McNally started in Chicago as a small print shop. Eventually, it grew into the prestigious mapping company we know today. In the 1980s, the company created a spiral-bound, multiple-wheel chart called The Dist-O-Map, Automatic Mileage Dialer. By spinning the wheels with the corresponding maps inside, you were able to determine the mileage between cities. The back of the Dist-O-Map gave information about the new U.S Road Markers of that time.        ...

Butternut Bread Price Wheel

The Swift Premium Meats Space Travel Guide
Posted by

Listing Photo It’s Throwback Thursday so let’s take a walk down memory lane and revisit Vintage Products! Nothing is more exciting to me than space travel, and back in 1958, Swift Premium created a wheel chart to educate kids about the solar system. You would set your planet of choice in the upper window. You then saw the astronomical sign, maximum surface temperature, distance from earth, and period of revolutions around the sun. When you turned the chart over, it showed the relative size and diameter of the planet. The graphics on this piece are fantastic, so it grabbed my print geek's attention. The attention to detail on the spaceship and galaxy is out of this world!    ...

Wheel Charts in movies!
Posted by

Listing Photo When I first started working at American Slide Chart | Perrygraf, I started to notice charts that were used in movies. I’m a big fan of Science Fiction movies. In Plan 9 from Outer Space by Ed Wood, a Wheel-Chart was used in the cockpit scene. To this day I still can’t seem to find any reference to it online but it does resemble one of our Date Forecasters. I’ve been told that a Wheel Chart was also used in the 90’s show L.A. Law but I have not been able to find the exact show that this was on. The most famous Wheel Chart that was featured in a movie is the black comedy Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb. The chart is used by Dr. Stangelove (Peter Sellers) in calculating a nuclear bomb's effects. While this blog is more of a Throwback Thursday, it’s still interesting to me when I see any type of Wheel...

A Throwback Chart with a History
Posted by

Listing Photo Sometimes I come across a chart that has historical implications that I never realize until I look it up on the web. This wheel chart for Polak’s Frutal was created as a converter for Imperial to Metric, but it’s the back story in the company that held my interest. Polak’s Frutal was incorporated in 1914 in Holland. They manufactured and sold essential oils, perfumes, and flavoring extracts in their plant. In anticipation of Holland being invaded by the Germans during World War II, family members moved to the United States in 1939-1940. They brought their knowledge of manufacturing their formulas with them. Holland was invaded and, the Germans seized their plant. But because the family had immigrated here, they continued to thrive in the United States. There aren’t too many times that a chart has an immigration story attached to it.     ...

The Kit includes a plant to grow, a spout for watering, a guide wheel and a growth chart for keeping track of your learning and growth of your plant. They were so pleased by our work that they asked us to create an ABC Learning Guide. The guide is a slide chart with multiple slides containing the alphabet. You insert a card into the slide chart and begin practicing the name and sound of a letter. Each letter has a fun graphic that represents the letter. The back of the chart comes with a tracking system that allows you to keep track of what you have learned. Both the Growth Guide and the ABC Learning Guide come with areas for children to p...

2020 Celebrations Pop-Up

Listing Photo It’s never too early to start thinking of 2020, especially when we have a fresh batch of designs coming out soon. Last year we discontinued the Celebrations Pop-Up. This year we decided to bring it back but with a different look.  We went all the way back to 1996 to pick up the whimsical designs featured in a Pop-Up called Seasons.  Since all of the designs were hand-drawn we decided to try and update it a bit and re-draw them on computer. As you can see from the images, the designs were clean, simple and fun!  We tried to keep the same idea of the seasonal designs but I had a problem drawing watermelons…instead of those I went with flip-flops. I guess drawing watermelons is my kryptonite… I will have to say my favorite panel is November. The design of the turkeys looking at a former compatriot makes me laugh every time! ...

Why I love Halloween!
Posted by

Listing Photo My favorite time of the year is Halloween. Maybe it’s because I was born in October but I’ve always loved the classic horror movie marathons that go on during the whole month. When I was younger I would pour through horror magazines. I guess that makes me what they call now a “Monster Kid”. A few years back we decided to run a competition on our Facebook page. We picked three horror monsters and created faux products utilizing these monsters. We gave our audience a chance to vote on their favorite monster. The monsters were a zombie, a vampire, and a werewolf.  The werewolf won by a landslide even though some of us Walking Dead fans were pulling for the zombie to win!   Years ago we did a polyhedron for the movie Puppet Master. This pop-up was packaged with multiple items that were sent to video stores with information on how to pro...

What is a Slide-Chart?
Posted by

Listing Photo A slide-chart is a hand-held device, usually of paper, cardboard, or plastic, for conducting simple calculations or looking up information. A circular slide chart is sometimes referred to as a wheel chart or volvelle.   BUT there is so much more to what we do here at American/Perrygraf! Here’s a little glossary of the terms we use.   Fold and Glue: A slide-chart that is folded book style. It incorporates a glue flap to close the chart up and has die-cut windows to set/read hidden data. Example: Kimberly Clark     Build Up: A slide-chart that is held together with grommets (sometimes called eyelets). As opposed to being book style, this is more along the lines of sandwich style. The slide inside the chart runs along strips which are called runners. Example: Philips     Doub...
